Step Up Shortboards

Step Ups are faster, more drivey Shortboards to those of the standard High Performance category. Perfectly designed for pumping hollow waves they are refined to give you a little extra paddle power for safer, earlier take offs without sacrificing too much manoeuvrability. The all-round ratings of these surfboards makes them excellent travel boards, especially if you are going on a boat trip to Indo or the Mentawais.

Popular Step-up models include the DHD - Sweet Spot, the Emery - Cannon and the Stacey - Werewolf Step-Up to name a few.

The Faded 2 by Chilli Surfboards is the updated version of the original Faded. Team rider Jay Davies has been test riding and narrowing down on the flaws of the original for the past couple of years until he settled on this latest version which according to him helps paddle into waves even earlier. The updates of the Faded Two include added volume through the centre up to the front of the board and added vee through the tail which allows the Faded 2.0 to be more versatile for rail surfing rather than a pick your line type step up.

All the features that make up this board are finely tuned to cover all travel scenarios when it could be 3ft or 10ft. For the break down of concave, rocker and rails see below!

Houdini
Firewire

$980.00

Making it easy to disappear and reappear in Hawaiian tubes, the Houdini by Slater Designs is our new magic act for Hawaiian waves, or other locations, where controlled lines through racy barrels are a must. The magic started in ‘18 between Wade and Kelly – and a year later it’s here, ready to sit alongside the No Brainer, FRK, and Cymatic. The Houdini has been a staple under Kelly’s feet for the 2019 WSL season, with both big face gouges at Margaret’s and remarkable makes at Pipeline on its resume. The bottom contour consists of a single to double with slight vee, in spite of its step-up frame, the Houdini has incredible acceleration and manoeuvrability. The Houdini model sticks with Kelly’s previously proven formula for his personal step-ups: hiding volume under his chest for better paddling, but maintaining a tapered rail for sensitivity. It’s available now in LFT, with five fin boxes for optionality.

$890.00

The Predator by Dylan Surfboards is a step up model for those heavier days. More volume under the chest allows getting into bigger waves, which is critical to get a good line. Combined with increased rocker for making those steep drops while fitting into hollow waves better. It also features low rails for bite and hold - so there is no sliding and the nose is not too pulled in but narrow enough. Tested around the world by the worlds best, this board comes with a very strong glass job for strength and extra drive. See more

Big Gun
Dylan
$890.00

The Big Gun by Dylan Surfboards is Dylan Longbottom's paddle in board for very large waves around the world. Designed to get into waves early with a lot more volume under the chest and a lot thicker than your standard step up board. It features a long rocker with a nice long drawn out planshape, low rails and a pulled in tail. It all depends on your weight/height/age ratio and where you surf to maximise volume. The Big Gun comes standard with a super strong glass job. See more

Sci-Fi 2.0
Firewire
$1,080.00

The new and improved version of one of the most popular designs in surfing. The Sci-fi 2.0 by Slater Designs is a versatile high performance surfboard that utilises a wide point forward outline and cleverly distributed volume to allow you to paddle on to waves a lot easier than your usual HP. Compared to the original Sci Fi the 2.0 has a more volume packed in, a pulled in tail and a rocker that's similar to the Cymatic. Due to the increase of volume the Sci Fi 2 is designed to be ridden 1" shorter than it's predecessor. The Sci-Fi might be a try to believe type board but it's hard to argue against something Kelly Slater is extremely psyched on riding.

FRK
Firewire
$980.00

The FRK by Firewire Surfboards was designed by Dan Mann (Mannkine) back in 2015 when Kelly Slater asked him to shape a board for the first time. Mann sent 2 squash tails and a rounded pin over to Slater and didn't hear back. What Mann didn't know is that Kelly surfed the sqaush tails and wasn't blown away. Fast-forward 2 years later and Mann get's hit with messages from Kelly and he's frothing. After 2 years of sitting unridden Kelly surfed Lowers, CA on the rounded pin and things instantly clicked. Kelly's sizing guide is "surf the size that is almost too small for you". The video below of Mann and Slater explaining this story is well worth the watch.

Mann created the FRK to be so free flowing that you could forget it's there. When you watch the videos below of Kelly ripping it's almost like the board is an extension of his body. If you are looking for a versatile performance shortboard that you can really maneuver fast and knife turns then this board could click with you too.
