Local Legends – Coby Perkovich

by aido on October 16, 2017

Here at Boardcave we’re all about underground shredders that lurk in the darkness with the rest of us mortals in the surfing world, the ones that shy away from the spotlight but truly shine in what they do. Coby is one of these people. Coby is a Gold Coast shaper/surfer who truly embodies the shaper/surfer enigma, he handshapes all his own boards and totally shreds on them. Being an NZ native but growing up in Australia he certainly is no stranger to good waves, this has allowed him to develop his unique style of radical freesurfing on the face and above the lip. Apart from surfing and shaping, this Gold Coast larrikin spends a fair amount of time at the skatepark shredding the concrete gnar.

Learning his handshaping skills from his dad as he was growing up, Coby developed his own brand of surfboards. Sabertooth Surfboards are shaped in a small family run factory alongside his dad in Murwillumbah, New South Wales. The setup is far from hi-tech, taking a more old school approach to board production. Using all hand tools, Coby manufactures the entire board from blank to final glassing. Although far from the waves, the boards are most definitely up to par when is comes to quality and performance as seen in the clip above.
